How To Do A Rain Swipe Radiation Measurement With A Geiger Counter As A Citizen Scientist

The schools, colleges, universities and governments do not teach anything to students about radiation, radiation testing or radiation protection, so most people have to start from zero. Don't feel bad if you know nothing about radiation. The nuclear industry wants it that way. They are happy most people are totally clueless about radiation, meters, and the whole nuclear industry. This is how they get away with all of their very dark deeds.

Radioactive contamination all around the world is generally increasing, especially in the rainfall, food and water. Because most of these emissions are not continuous, but more in the form of 'burps', the hot rain seems to come down in the same way.

Some rain and falling dust in the air is 'hot' and highly radioactive, as the above video shows, and some is not. The only way to tell is to wipe a car hood, windshield, or other smooth surface, right after it starts raining . Measure the wet wipe with a Geiger Counter, without touching the detector, but also without putting a barrier in the way of the radiation, unless you are trying to figure out which kind of radiation you are detecting. LEARN THE BASICS ABOUT THE DIFFERENT RADIATION TYPES


The first step before testing rain for radiation is to learn about alpha, beta and gamma radiation. These are what will show up in a rain swipe test.

A normal radiation detector will not be able to detect neutron radiation, but it is also out there.

It is important to understand that radiation is invisible and undetectable to human senses even at deadly levels. Trust your radiation detector, no matter what it says, at all times. Don't trust your senses, because they lie when it comes to radiation, and are not designed to detect them. You may taste or smell a 'metallic' odor or taste in high radiation exposure fallout clouds, but odds are great that you will see, hear, smell and taste NOTHING. Your radiation meter will be the only thing protecting you, and you have to learn to trust it.

BUY A GEIGER COUNTER TO TEST RAIN IN YOUR AREA

If you don't have a radiation detector, click on the link below. This brand is recommended by AGRP and has the round pancake style of detector head, which is much more sensitive than the cheaper tube types of detectors. Invest in high quality equipment if your budget can afford it. But a cheaper tube type of radiation detector is better than none at all.

STAY SAFE, DON'T GET EXPOSED TO VERY HOT RADIOACTIVE RAIN

Turn on the radiation detector and see what the background radiation is with the radiation meter running indoors. Now point it out an open window or door and see if you get elevated readings for about ten seconds or longer. If you get no elevated readings, that means the rain coming down is not 'super hot', from an upwind nuclear accident. 

If you get elevated readings and the alarm goes off (over 100 CPM) when pointing your radiation meter outdoors, but it goes down when indoors with the door and window closed, it may be wiser to stay indoors, as this indicates 'hot' rain, and may be due to a radiation washout from an upwind nuclear leak, reactor changeout, or nuclear accident. 

You can also point the detector head up diagonally at the sky/clouds and get a reading from under a roof or an umbrella, without allowing water to drip on the detector. This will give you a rough idea of what is up in the clouds. If you get an increase in radiation reading by pointing at the clouds, it may indicate high levels of radiation about to come down, or a 'hot' rain coming down; be careful and protect yourself. Don't get wet.

If you as a citizen scientist do decide to test the rain for radiation, make sure you stay safe when collecting a swiped rain sample. Use an umbrella, and possibly rain suit, rubber boots and rubber gloves.  At the very least, put the paper towel inside of a baggie that is turned inside out. Holding the plastic baggie with the paper towel inside of it, wipe the metal surface of your car or mailbox, (2 square feet).

Now fold the plastic baggie over the wet paper towel and seal it with a zip lock before you bring it inside the house. Don't get any of the rain on your hands. Take off your wet shoes and raincoat off outside and leave the umbrella outside as well, just in case the test result comes in as radioactively 'hot' rain. Don't bring any radioactive rain inside with you. Assume it is 'hot' until proven otherwise.

 The test above in three parts shows what most people should find in their rain swipe sample, at most times, which is close to zero radiation above background levels. But if you keep testing, and particularly if you live downwind of a nuclear facility, you will more than likely eventually pick up radiation in rain at higher levels. On a rare occasion, you may even pick up a high radiation level. 

A STANDARD RAIN SWIPE IS TWO SQUARE FEET


The standard 'rule' for a rain wipe test is to swipe 2 square feet, and no more. This gives a standardized test that will provide a framework to compare readings online with other citizen scientists who are doing this and posting results in places like Youtube for example. 

Wiping a larger surface increases the radiation readings. This is why it is important to also state how much in square feet of surface area the swipe test includes, so people can get some idea of what a radiation reading means and what they need to do to duplicate your results, via a 'citizen scientist peer review process'.

HOW TO TEST RAIN SWIPE SAMPLE FOR ALPHA, BETA, AND GAMMA RADIATION LEVELS


Now test the wet paper towel through the opened baggie with nothing in between it and the detector, (don't let sample touch detector). Get the detector head close to the wet paper towel, as close as you can without touching, because alpha radiation only travels a very short distance. This test gives you alpha, beta and gamma radiation

HOW TO SCREEN FOR ALPHA RADIATION


Now repeat the test, but block the sample with two pieces of paper to screen out Alpha radiation.. This will tell you how much of the radiation tested is alpha radiation. What is left going through this screen is beta and gamma radiation together. A plastic bag won't block alpha radiation.

Beta radiation goes through paper just like gamma radiation will.

HOW TO SCREEN FOR BETA RADIATION


Now repeat the test again, but use a thick phone book to screen out both alpha and beta radiation. All that is left at this point is gamma radiation. 

Record your swipe readings and the the different test results on paper, via a photograph, on video or via graph on a computer if possible, if your detector has this capability.

IF SAMPLE TESTS HOT THROUGH A PHONE BOOK, PUT IT AWAY FROM PEOPLE AND PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY FROM THE RAIN

If radiation levels are over 100 CPM with the screening test above, make sure to stay out of this rain, and protect your family from it as well. Trust that this rain is dangerous to be in, even if it is just radon. If the radiation level stays high through the whole screening process, it is even more dangerous. Stay indoors and do not go out in that rain.

Seal the sample inside of a ziplock baggie and if it still tests hot through a phone book, put it somewhere safe and away from people. Try to warn the media and other activists about this kind of really hot rain, because that is when the stuffing will really hit the fan. Call everyone you know that has a Geiger Counter and ask them to test the rain and air as well.

WHAT TO DO IF RADIATION TESTS HIGH 

Odds are high that most rainfall you test will show normal background levels. But, if you test long enough, and you test enough rainfall events, you will find elevated levels of radiation eventually. Rarely, you may even find hazardous radiation levels. There is no way to tell ahead of time, so it is important to protect your skin and clothing from what could be high radiation exposure. Safety first. Once you find the radiation in rain is average background level, feel free to run around in it in a bathing suit. 

HIGHLY Radioactive Rain! What Should You Do? ☢
So, you have found that your rain is high in radiation and you are curious what to do? I have seen so many recent videos showing thousands of counts per minute of radiation. 

It is important to report very high readings to the proper authorities, such as your local environmental agency, and have your samples tested and verified.

When your Geiger counter detects radiation of an activity of greater than 1,000 counts per minute / meter squared, you are probably in the midst of something you should remove yourself from. Before you post a video showing this, consider that you might also wish to get some help, or at least a second opinion, before alarming people. If you do contact your local, state, or national EPA, you might include this in your video to allow others to know you did the right thing.

If you are under the impression that your queries will go unanswered, the fact that you post a video with carefully verifiable tests and information showing that you contacted the authorities, might spur them to help you.

P.S. When showing a paper swipe test, please be sure to open the paper to show it free of anything and show your entire work area, with a careful test, all in the same scene and with the camera show all areas. This helps ensure people understand the sincerity of your work.

You can get a rough idea of what is going on by monitoring radiation via one of the networks around the world. Double check what you are detecting via one of the networks. There is a chance that a meter can malfunction and show a high radiation reading when none is really present. Always try and get some verification of a high reading via the 'network' around you. EPA radiation monitors generally read much higher radiation levels than standard Geiger counters, and antiprotons explains why here....

antiprotons ....The EPA is measuring radiation using a large and sensitive scintillator. Scintillator readings can be massively higher than Geiger Counters. The scintillator is measuring while our Geiger Counters are detecting and reporting an average frequency of events.

REPEAT SAME SCREENING TEST ON RAIN SAMPLE OVER TIME


Test the same sample again in 8 hours. Test it again in 24 hours. Test it again in 1 week and 2 weeks. Post your overall results and spread them around on Enenews, Facebook and on Youtube. 

If the radiation persists for more than 1 week, and it keeps the same high level through a phone book, it is NOT radon. If the radiation level disappears quickly, it is probably radon. 

If the readings persist high for more than 2 weeks, contact a lab and get some follow up tests done to identify what the radioactive element or isotope is, because it is not radon. It is worth a follow up by the EPA or some independent lab. It is also worth a news story, because someone let something go upwind of you, and it worth trying to figure out what that source was, and where it came from.

Radon rain out can also be forecast and 'tracked' by following the jet stream, which usually carries the rain, storms and heavy duty thunderstorms. Usually, as the rain falls, the radiation networks light up and radiation levels increase, just due to radon, as illustrated by the picture above. But this is also when something worse will come down if something bad happened upwind, but they are 'hiding' it, either by covering it up, or by throwing it up into the upper atmosphere through those huge, tall vent stacks at every nuclear plant.. 

Watch the radiation networks combined with the jet stream to get the latest and greatest, because they can't hide anymore, with all of the citizen radiation detector networks going up all around the world. It is insane that we have to watch these people, because they throw invisible poison into the air whenever they feel like, and never warn anyone, but that is the way of the world right now..
