Former Shale Gas CEO Says Fracking Revolution Has Been ‘A Disaster’ For Drillers, Investors | DeSmogBlog

Steve Schlotterbeck, who led drilling company EQT as it expanded to become the nation’s largest producer of natural gas in 2017, arrived at a petrochemical industry conference in Pittsburgh Friday morning with a blunt message about shale gas drilling and fracking.

“The shale gas revolution has frankly been an unmitigated disaster for any buy-and-hold investor in the shale gas industry with very few limited exceptions,” Schlotterbeck, who left the helm of EQT last year, continued. “In fact, I’m not aware of another case of a disruptive technological change that has done so much harm to the industry that created the change.”

“While hundreds of billions of dollars of benefits have accrued to hundreds of millions of people, the amount of shareholder value destruction registers in the hundreds of billions of dollars,” he said. “The industry is self-destructive.”

Schlotterbeck is not the first industry insider to ring alarm bells about the shale industry’s record of producing vast amounts of gas while burning through far more cash than it can earn by selling that gas. And drillers’ own numbers speak for themselves. Reported spending outweighed income for a group of 29 large public shale gas companies by $6.7 billion in 2018, bringing the group’s 2010 to 2018 cash flow to a total of negative $181 billion, according to a March 2019 report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis.

With the worldwide price of oil continuing to drop, natural gas companies in North Dakota are trying to stay competitive by pushing through changes allowing radioactive fracking waste to be dumped in landfills.

Current rules require drillers to transport potentially harmful fracking byproducts to specialized facilities in neighboring states, but with the industry fighting for its survival, cutting corners is just one strategy to remain profitable. RT’s Marina Portnaya examines.

It used to be that landfills were owned and operated by cities or counties. Recently though, many dumps and garbage collection companies have been privatized. The downside is that private companies always seek more profit, and there is a lot of money is hazardous waste disposal as well as radioactive waste disposal.

Two environmental activist groups asked the North Dakota attorney general Friday to delay action on new radioactive waste rules until the office determines if a meeting to approve them was legal.

The Dakota Resource Council and the North Dakota Energy Industry Waste Coalition want a legal opinion on whether the State Health Council — a citizens advisory board to the State Health Department — met legally in August when it approved new rules to allow up to 50 picocuries of radioactive waste to be disposed in special oil and gas waste landfills.

Neighbors worried about radioactive waste in landfill, dumped there back in the good old days when the nuclear industry claimed it was safe and there was no harm from it.

There is a lawsuit around this that has been going on since 2007. As of 2014, the lawsuit is still in the 'factfinding' stage, despite millions having been spent by the government.  As the next story shows, no one is willing to do anything about, because it costs a lot of money, and the EPA has no money to spend on this type of thing. 

Taxpayers end up footing the bill for all nuclear industry waste.

Nuclear waste dump site experiences second release of radiation

Another release of radiation has been detected in Carlsbad, NM, one month after an underground fire at the nuclear waste site there caused the initial toxic waste release. A recently released government report states that the first release was preventable and due to lax maintenance, while this second release is under investigation. RT's Gayane Chichkyan has the latest details on this dangerous situation.

West Lake Landfill Has Potential to Spew Nuclear Radioactive Waste
This landfill contains nuclear waste from atomic bomb making project and radioactive materials. This was dumped all from the 30's to the 70s, mixed in with regular waste. As methane gas comes out of the landfill, the radioactive gases come out with it. In this case, an underground landfill fire collapsed the clay liner and methane gas extraction system. These fires happen all over the country, and the fires were never a concern. The problem is that radioactive waste combines with the fire and people end up breathing the radioactive waste. In this case, the fire will have catastrophic consequences if it reaches the radioactive waste materials. 

Nuclear waste at this dump was used as 'regular dirt' to cover the landfill waste. It looked like dirt, and was mixed in to cover that day's landfill contents. This landfill is in the middle of a metropolitan area. 

The city fathers want the radioactive waste removed in order to remove the hazard from the community. Since 2008, this problem has been 'studied', but no one has been willing to do anything about it, in terms of getting it out.

COLUMBIA — A Charleston Republican has filed a bill to reinforce a law preventing more states from bringing low-level radioactive waste to South Carolina.

If radioactive waste is so safe and does not cause any problems, why not accept it from everyone, everywhere? Maybe people are starting to wake up to the dangers, hazards and lack of solutions around nuclear waste.. and then again, maybe not.

How many dumps and landfills accept nuclear waste today?

How many of them accepted it in the past?

Where are the records?

Very few people are even aware of this invisible and deadly problem, unless it comes along with really bad smells, which is the exception, not the rule. Radiation is invisible and undetectable by the senses.

Veterinarian Scientists, Crops, and Animals: Fracking
Recent studies by public health and veterinarian scientists are confirming there is cause for concern when it comes to fracking's potential impact on farm crops and animals. Soon after the big rig had started drilling about four miles from Cleghorn's farm, a neighboring organic farmer who lived downhill from that rig soon saw one of her farm's water sources, a spring, polluted by what looked like orange acid mine drainage from an old coal mine that the drilling had apparently circulated toward her spring.

The neighboring farmer also began seeing health issues in her dogs. She told Cleghorn she believed her collies' health issues resulted from walking through a puddle of fracking wastewater. The neighbor told Cleghorn that her dogs had licked the salty fluid from their paws after walking through the wastewater that had been illegally spread on the dirt road bordering her farm. Subsequently, one of the collies gave birth to seven puppies stillborn out of a litter of 11. Another died of cancer within a year even though she was still in her prime.

Cleghorn worries the incident is an ominous sign of a growing fracking footprint's impact on domestic pets, livestock and agriculture across the county…
