FACTS THAT ASTRONOMERS AND PHYSICISTS KNOW


There are more known universes that are visible to the Hubble space telescope than all of the grains of sand in the entire world. 

Our stargazer gets a Hubble telescope and a calculator, so now we can count distant galaxies, faint stars, red dwarfs, everything we've ever recorded in the sky, and boom! Now the population of stars jumps enormously, to 70 thousand million, million, million stars in the observable universe (a 2003 estimate), so that we've got multiple stars for every grain of sand — which means, sorry, grains, you are nowhere near as numerous as the stars.

My point is this: if you want to accurately estimate how many planets there are in our galaxy, you can't just take the number of planets we find around our star and multiply it by the number of stars in our galaxy. That's a naïve estimate that we'd make in the absence of evidence. But just for fun, that'd give us somewhere around two-to-three trillion planets in our galaxy. And as we know from our own Solar System, there's a great variety of what the surfaces of those planets could look like.

WASHINGTON — Space is vast, but it may not be so lonely after all: A study finds the Milky Way is teeming with billions of planets that are about the size of Earth, orbit stars just like our sun, and exist in the Goldilocks zone — not too hot and not too cold for life.

Astronomers using NASA data have calculated for the first time that in our galaxy alone, there are at least 8.8 billion stars with Earth-size planets in the habitable temperature zone.

The study was published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

This Is How We Know There Are Two Trillion Galaxies In The Universe
When you gaze up at the night sky, through the veil of stars and the plane of the Milky Way close by, you can’t help but feel small before the grand abyss of the Universe that lies beyond. Even though nearly all of them are invisible to our eyes, our observable Universe, extending tens of billions of light years in all directions, contains a fantastically large number of galaxies within it.

Just how many galaxies are out there used to be a mystery, with estimates rising from the thousands to the millions to the billions, all as telescope technology improved. If we made the most straightforward estimate using today’s best technology, we’d state there are 170 billion galaxies in our Universe. But we know more than that, and our modern estimate is even grander: two trillion galaxies. Here’s how we got there.

Now multiply 8 billion habitable planets that are just in our ONE galaxy, times the 2 trillion galaxies that exceed all of the number of grains of sand in the world, and you get a number of potentially habitable planets, that boggles the mind.
