Food Radiation Testing Machine Choices, Reasons Why, And How To Set Up A Community Or Store Based Testing Center

Antiproton explains the details of using some of the high tech equipment that could be used in a radiation food testing lab.

There are many food testing scintillator spectrometer choices. In this article we will focus on a range of machines that cost anywhere from $1,900 to $18,000.  In the view of AGRP, the ideal food radiation testing machine would display at the very least, cesium radiation in Bq/kg on the computer screen, not require mashing of the food, and test a food item quickly, spending no more than 10 minutes per sample to test it. Each machine will test differently, take different times, may require mashing or blending of food, require a special food sample container etc. Be sure to ask lots of questions, especially minimum detection times and minimum detection limits.

Each of the following machines does things differently. Some graph out all radiation on a screen, breaking it down by individual isotope. Some measure only cesium. Most if not all of these machines do not detect alpha radiation.

It pays to ask lots of questions and also talk with satisfied customers before committing to buy. The good thing is that there are lots of choices out there. Be sure to ask about warranties, test the customer service, and ask about calibration, how often it is needed, who does it, what it costs, etc.

POLIMASTER

"I have been enjoying my new Polimaster PM1703MO-1B. The device is a fully gamma spectrometer, isotope detector, scintillation counter, and dosimeter!!! All for a unit the size of a pager. I use it to test some select foods which I consider higher in risk (tuna from the pacific, for example). My full sized gamma spectrometer (Spectrum techniques UCS30) is more sensitive but not as easy to use or as portable.  This unit retails for something like $2700."

Before purchasing a portable unit like this, do your research and compare it to the stationary equipment designed to test foods inside of a shielded container, such as the ones below. Remember that this device is not designed specifically to test for radiation in food. But if Antiproton is concerned enough to test for radiation in food, and he is an expert in radiation, that says something, correct?

GAMMAPAL - PORTABLE UNIT

Radiation Alert® GammaPAL

The GammaPAL is a complete measuring system for analyzing radiation contamination in milk, meat, fish, grain, fruit, and vegetables, as well as in air swipes, soil samples, and other materials.

GammaPAL / Portable Radiation Analysis Laboratory

The GammaPAL is your all-in-one sampling kit for radiation safety, the ideal instrument for detecting contamination in food, soil, and water. A portable laboratory containing all the items you need for sampling in the field or from a stationary base of operations. The GammaPAL is a complete measuring system for analyzing radiation contamination in milk, meat, fish, grain, fruit, and vegetables, as well as in air swipes, soil samples, and other materials.

Includes: Inspector survey meter with wipe test plate and swipes for preliminary testing, a rugged Nomad Pocket PC with bar code scanner for easily labeling samples, tools for sample collection, and screw top marinelli beakers for sample storage.

Our GM based detectors are ideal for a number of applications, ranging from surface contamination and sampling to personal and environmental monitoring. For detecting contamination in food, soil, and water and to accurately quantify and qualify the results, you need a scintillation detector. Many scintillation devices with this capacity cost upwards of tens of thousands of dollars. The GammaPAL can provide these capabilities for much less.

Sample Time vs. LLD for Background Counts

Radioactive material in the sample is detected with a 2x2 sodium iodide scintillation probe using a Marinelli geometry for soil, water, and bulk samples or a 2-inch filter geometry for wipes and air samples. The 500ml beaker is placed in a 1-inch thick lead shield. Depending on the sampling time and the isotope, the detection limit is approximately 2.5-100 Bq/l and can easily identify concentrations of Iodine 131, Cesium 134, and Cesium 137.

CAN A PERSON TEST FOR RADIATION IN FOOD WITH  A TUBE TYPE GEIGER COUNTER?

https://youtu.be/BIKro3s6eU4

This video featuring W Milberry does a great job of explaining why the cheaper tube type Geiger Counters cannot be used for detecting food radiation, at all. M also goes into why a person could potentially use a pancake style detector as a very crude food radiation testing device, to warn against high levels of radiation.

Realizing that money is a limitation for many people, one idea to set up a very inexpensive testing center in your home is to purchase a very sensitive pancake style detector with a handheld wand on the end of a cable.

Now build or buy either a water or (painted) lead box and put the pancake detector inside of it, with the test sample, for a timed test. Compare this timed test of a food sample inside the lead box or water shielded container, to a timed test of background radiation outside of this shielded container. The result would be a crude food testing lab, built for less money than the more expensive and much more sensitive detectors that ARE specifically designed to test food, such as the ones listed in this article.  (Remember that lead is very toxic, so protect it by adding a layer of copper, tin, or aluminum both outside and inside.)

Bottom line, Geiger Counters are not designed to test radiation in food, but it is possible to do a very crude test with a pancake style detector, which will not provide any information about what is actually being detected.. The benefit of the more expensive food radiation testing machines is that they actually tell you what kind of radiation is being detected, via a chart, graph, computer screen or printout.

WHY SET UP A FOOD RADIATION TESTING LAB?

Free DIY Food Radiation Testing Lab Guide

"What is involved in setting up a DIY, or community food testing lab?

Why purchase radiation food testing equipment? The technology to deal with the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster hasn't been created yet!

1. The Fukushima Nuclear disaster is much worse than you are being told.

2. Multiple nuclear reactors have melted down, and multiple fuel cooling pools that contained multiple old reactor cores have been vaporised, or are still releasing large amounts of contamination into the atmosphere and Pacific Ocean.

3. The Northern Pacific Ocean, plus large areas of Japan, Alaska, Western Canada, Western and Central USA, and Eastern Russia, have been significantly contaminated with radioactive fallout. They are still being contaminated by radioactive fallout from Fukushima.

4. Radiation bio-accumulates, particularly in meat, dairy and seafood, grown and harvested in radiation contaminated areas. "

SUMMARY

70% to 90% of all toxic man made radiation comes into the body and accumulates via food and drinks over a longer period of time.  It pays to know what the amount of radiation is in the food and drinks you are consuming. What happens over time is that even low doses of radiation in food and drinks accumulate in the body.

There are ways of checking for this build up, via hair analysis, blood analysis, urine analysis, or a whole body internal radiation scan. Each test has drawbacks or advantages.

Cesium radiation (from Fukushima?) has been found internally in the USA, in at least one case. How many more people are out there with this same issue? Without testing both food, drinks and people, no one will know.

Kids are especially sensitive to radiation, much more so than adults. Since radiation from nuclear accidents has spread all over the world, it helps to test foods and drinks with a sensitive community based food radiation testing machine.

It also helps to have this type of device available in your local grocery store, making it possible to test foods of concern before purchasing them.
