A new study has found that there has been a dramatic decline in Antarctic sea ice. After decades of expansion, the sea ice around the continent has been hit by a sudden and dramatic decline, wiping out the progress seen in recent years. In 2014, there was 12.78 million square kilometres of sea ice and that plunged to just 10.75 million square kilometres by 2018. Antarctica has now lost as much sea ice in four years as the Arctic has lost in the past 34 years.

Our oceans are rising. With human use of hydrocarbons skyrocketing, waters around the globe are getting hotter and, now, this warm sub-surface water is washing into Antarctica’s massive western glaciers causing the glaciers to retreat and break off.

The Antarctic holds 90% of the world’s ice and 70% of its freshwater, so if even a small fraction of the ice sheet in Antarctica melts, the resulting sea level rise will completely remap the world as we know it – and it is already happening. In the last decade, some of the most significant glaciers here have tripled their melt rate.

This movie also details how the fossil fuel industry and Koch Brothers fund denialists who try and claim that global warming does not exist, or that it has no negative impact.

The temperature rise in the Antarctic is now approaching 3 degrees, over historic highs. The combination of warming air and oceans is increasing the melt rate on both poles.

"....all that extra heat forcing is causing the world to warm unevenly. As of 2009, the Arctic was warming up at a pace more than two times faster than the rest of the globe. And in the 40 year period from 1971 through 2011 NASA found that the Arctic had warmed about 3.55 degrees Fahrenheit while the rest of the world had warmed by 1.44 F. But that was before the big global heat spike during 2015 and 2016 further disproportionately heated the Arctic — pushing it into new record hot temperature ranges. In the end, it appears that the Arctic will eventually warm by about 2.5 to 3 C for every 1 C of overall global temperature rise. And the extreme heat we are seeing now in the Arctic is just a larger part of the geologically rapid warming trend now being driven primarily by human fossil fuel emissions.

Research aimed at answering that question has been done before, but a recent study by Patrick Taylor, a scientist at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., suggests a new reason. Taylor's research shows the Earth's poles are warming faster than the rest of the planet because of energy in the atmosphere that is carried to the poles through large weather systems.

The scientist tells Zay that when he first got there, the station where they were at was right next to a glacier, which ended right there at the research station. One section of the glacier broke off about once a week ten years ago, and that was a big deal, so they all went outside to see it. Since then, the glacier has retreated about 1/2 mile, and the calving has accelerated to 7 times a DAY, rather than once a week. Now the calving happens to often, they do not even watch it anymore, nor go outside for this very frequent happening.

ANTARCTIC PENGUINS EXPERIENCING MASS DIE OFF DUE TO WARMING, BECAUSE EGGS SIT IN RAIN WATER, RATHER THAN SITTING ON TOP OF ICE


In another section of the show, biologists show how one species of Antarctic penguin has had their population reduced from 15,000 to 3,000, due to the climate warming in the Antarctic so much that their eggs drown in sitting rain water, rather than sitting on top of ice.

In a paper published today (June 29) in Scientific Reports, the researchers project that approximately 30 percent of current Adélie colonies may be in decline by 2060 and approximately 60 percent may be in decline by 2099.

"It is only in recent decades that we know Adélie penguins population declines are associated with warming, which suggests that many regions of Antarctica have warmed too much and that further warming is no longer positive for the species," said the paper's lead author Megan Cimino, who earned her doctoral degree at UD in May.

Co-authors on the work include Matthew Oliver, principal investigator on the project and Patricia & Charles Robertson Professor of Marine Science & Policy in UD's College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment; Heather J. Lynch, assistant professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at Stony Brook University; and Vincent S. Saba, a research fishery biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service.

The Adélie penguin is a species that breeds around the entire Antarctic continent. The species is experiencing population declines along the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), which is one of the most rapidly warming places on Earth, while Adélie populations in other areas around the continent where the climate is stable or even cooling remain steady or increasing.

In other words, there is a mass die off of penguins happening in the most  remote, coldest, and hardest to get to place on Earth, due to TOO MUCH HEAT.

WARMING OCEAN IS MELTING LARGEST PINE ISLAND GLACIER IN ANTARCTIC FROM UNDERNEATH

For five years, a scientific expedition tried reaching Pine Island Glacier ice shelf in a remote, wind-ridden corner of Antarctica. The obstacles to get to the ice shelf were extreme, but the science goal was simple: to measure how fast the sea was melting the 37-mile long ice tongue from underneath by drilling through the ice shelf.

The international team, led by NASA's emeritus glaciologist Robert Bindschadler and funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA, had to abort their mission in 2007....Those measurements taken on and below the Pine Island Glacier ice shelf have yielded their first scientific results, determining the rate at which warm sea water is eating away the ice from underneath the floating portion of the glacier.

"20 August 2014 A new assessment from Europe's CryoSat spacecraft shows Greenland to be losing about 375 cu km of ice each year. Added to the discharges coming from Antarctica, it means Earth's two big ice sheets are now dumping roughly 500 cu km of ice in the oceans annually. "The contribution of both ice sheets together to sea level rise has doubled since 2009," said Angelika Humbert from Germany's Alfred Wegener Institute."

Satellite measurements of Arctic sea ice extent reveal a rapid decline over the past 30 years, particularly at the end of each year's annual melt season. The downward trend and the increasing difference between seasons are in keeping with predictions of the effects of global warming. As the Arctic warms, the volume of ice in the region gradually declines, making it less likely ice will survive more than one year and thus exposing more open water at the end of each melt season.

A European satellite show melting of an antarctic ice sheet is accelerating, losing more than 35 cubic miles of ice annually, scientists say. The loss observed by the European Space Agency's CryoSat is considerably more than when the area was last surveyed, they said. The total is dominated by ice losses from three glaciers flowing into the Amundsen Sea, a release from the Paris headquarters of the ESA said Thursday.

The continent-wide average surface temperature trend of Antarctica is positive and significant at >0.05 °C/decade since 1957.[2][3][4][5] The West Antarctic ice sheet has warmed by more than 0.1 °C/decade in the last 50 years, and is strongest in winter and spring.

A new study led by NASA researchers shows that half-a-dozen key glaciers in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet are in irreversible decline. The melting of these sprawling icy giants will affect global sea levels in the centuries ahead.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCHERS REPORT HOW ANTARCTIC ICE SHELF IS MELTING FROM BELOW AT RATE OF 6 CENTIMETERS PER DAY, DUE TO WARMING OCEAN


In a paper published in the journal Science on Sept. 13, the team describes how at one of their study sites, halfway down the ice shelf, the melt rate was as high as 2.36 inches (6 centimeters) per day.

From Thinkprogress; "An international team of researchers found that Antarctica’s Pine Island Glacier, the single largest Antarctic contributor to sea-level rise, could add as much as one centimeter to ocean levels within the next 20 years. The glacier “has started a phase of self-sustained retreat and will irreversibly continue its decline,” Gael Durand, a glaciologist with France’s Grenoble Alps University, told Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

“At the Pine Island Glacier we have seen that not only is more ice flowing from the glacier into the ocean, but it’s also flowing faster across the grounding line — the boundary between the grounded ice and the floating ice,” Dr. G. Hilmar Gudmundsson, a researcher on the project, told Planet Earth Magazine. The glaciologists found that that glacier’s grounding line, which has already receded up to 10 kilometers this century, is “probably engaged in an unstable 40-kilometer retreat.”

ANTARCTIC LAND BASED GLACIER ICE MELT HAS CAUSED GLOBAL OCEAN LEVELS TO RISE FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS, FURTHER SEA LEVEL RISES ARE GUARANTEED


According to the latest research, Antarctic ice melt has caused global sea level to rise by about 0.02 centimeters a year for the last 20 years. Last year’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report stated that there was “high confidence that ice shelves around the Antarctic peninsula continue a long-term trend of retreat and partial collapse that began decades ago.”

CSMonitor reports that; "Antarctic glacier melt is a major cause of rising sea levels. With the help of a robotic underwater vehicle, scientists have now determined why one big glacier is disappearing. The rate at which the ice shelf is melting has increased significantly, because more warm water is circulating in the cavity beneath it…The inner cavity didn’t exist at all before, so this is the most likely explanation for why a subtle change in temperature can have a huge effect."

THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN PARTS OF ANTARCTIC HAVE WARMED BY NEARLY 3 DEGREES AND IS ONE OF THE FASTEST WARMING PARTS OF EARTH
The central and southern parts of the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula have warmed by nearly 3 °C. Researchers reported December 21, 2012 in Nature Geoscience that from 1958 to 2010, the average temperature at the mile-high Byrd Station rose by 2.4 degrees Celsius, with warming fastest in its winter and spring. The spot which is in the heart of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is one of the fastest-warming places on Earth.[11][12][13]

ANTARCTIC LAND BASED GLACIER ICE MELT IS ACCELERATING, MELTING 50 PERCENT FASTER THAN JUST 15 YEARS AGO


Science.time.com reports; "We already know that Arctic ice is melting faster than expected, and that sea level rise will likely bust the IPCC predictions. Now, thanks to a new paper published yesterday in Nature Geoscience, we have a better idea of why. Researchers from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory examined the Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica—one of the frozen continent’s largest glaciers—and found that it was melting more than 50% faster than it had been just 15 years ago, when an earlier group of scientists visited it. The glacier is now losing 80 cu. km of ice a year, up from 50 cu. km in 1994."

STUDY OF ANCIENT SEDIMENTARY LAYERS CONFIRMS THAT EXTREME SEA LEVEL RISE ACCOMPANIES INCREASE IN CO2 LEVELS


The Pliocene sedimentary sequence in the drillcore consisted of sixteen distinct layers, alternating between diatom-rich silty clay and diatom-poor clay layers with silt laminations. Diatom-rich sediments point to multiple extended periods of increased biological productivity related to less sea ice and warmer spring and summer sea surface temperatures. This sequence is in good agreement with data from marine and land-based records from the Antarctic Peninsula margin, the Ross Sea and other areas. Reconstructions indicate that during the Pliocene there were prolonged (~200,000 years) warm intervals, when spring and summer sea surface temperatures were between 2 and 6C above modern levels, with a general background theme of warmer-than-present temperatures.

What contribution to Pliocene sea-level rise would this EAIS retreat have had? Existing ice sheet models imply that the figure is somewhere between 3 and 16 metres. The new findings will aid the refinement of such modelling: more importantly, the data from the Pliocene show that parts of the EAIS are more capable of dynamic and radical responses to warmer climate conditions than was thought to be the case. As with the research into the Pliocene Arctic, the results point out a stark scenario:

* the Pliocene was a time when greenhouse gases were at similar levels to today;

* the Pliocene was generally warmer than today and sometimes considerably warmer for prolonged periods;

* the Pliocene saw the repeated collapses of the Greenland and West Antarctic Ice-sheets during the prolonged warmer periods;

* the Pliocene also saw ice-sheet margins retreating significantly in East Antarctica during the prolonged warmer periods;

* the Pliocene saw global ice retreat leading to global sea level rise of 22 +/- 10 metres during the prolonged warmer periods.

The implications of the points above are clear: if we want to avoid transitioning to a warm Pliocene climate, including substantial sea-level rise, we need to make the transition back from the Pliocene atmosphere that we have created in the past decades, to one that favours relative climate stability.

SUMMARY


What is the take away from all of these studies and other research? Global warming due to human caused fossil and nuclear fuels is affecting even an area that is farthest away from all human activities, in the Southern Hemisphere.



All of the trend lines are going in a direction that indicates ice being lost on both poles and in Greenland. The graph above shows the Arctic sea ice downward trend, headed for a completely ice free 'blue water' state, which will spell the beginning of climate chaos and extreme weather events.

The melting of the Arctic plus Antarctic ice caps is the result of human activities, as the globe should be cooling right now, due to reduced solar activity. The retreating glaciers are well established globally and easy to see in the Arctic, but now the same process has been documented as happening in the Antarctic region too.

What is the cause of global warming and climate changes?


Once the Arctic becomes ice free in the summer, then the weather will really get weird, as the darker  Arctic blue water absorbs more heat, rather than the ice layer reflecting the sun's heat away. Once the Arctic becomes ice free in the winter, you don't want to know what happens next...

Ice serves as a buffer for really crazy weather extremes, which will happen more and more often as the ice melts and disappears. The latent heat absorbing effect of ice will no longer be there as a buffer. HUGE changes can and will happen very quickly once the Arctic is ice free first in summer, then in winter..
