Water - Why Coal, Gas, Nuclear And Oil Fired Power Plants Are Dead Enders; Does Wind Power Kill Too Many Birds? Why Coal/Nuclear Jobs Are Not Coming Back, No Matter How Hard President Trump Tries With Corporate Entitlements/Welfare

WHATEVER IS NOT SUSTAINABLE IS TERMINAL

Anything that is not sustainable is terminal, by definition. Extracting fossil water a rate that orders of magnitude greater than the recharge rate is not sustainable, and thus it is a terminal, suicidal practice. Yet humanity continues to pump out groundwater at a rate that far exceeds the natural recharge rate.

THE GRAPES OF WRATH PART DEUX
Fossil fuels are critical to many industries, but most especially to food product, hence why any interruption to their supply (in the absence of suitable alternatives) would be so devastating. However, there’s one fossil resource that often slips under the radar, but which is equally, if nor more critical to food production – fossil water.

In many parts of the world, water from underground aquifers now represents a key source of water, for both farming and drinking water. However this water is not a sustainable resource. The water has built up in these aquifers over many thousands of years. The recharge rate of fresh water in is a tiny fraction of what’s being taken out. So once its gone its gone. And as the documentary film “Pumped Dry” discusses, those water levels have been dropping alarming…

NUCLEAR REACTORS USE UP TO 30 MILLION GALLONS PER HOUR

"That sucking sound you hear? That's Georgia Power and its partners preparing to pull 74 million gallons of water a day out of the Savannah River to cool the nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro."

"It takes the same amount of water required by a city of 5 million to fuel a typical U.S. nuclear power plant for one hour: 30 million gallons"

Whoa –- you probably know that solar power plants produce electricity without producing carbon pollution, but did you all realize they also save so much water?
Update: Data sourced from http://1bog.org/blog/world-water-day-go-solar-save-water/

Multiply 400 nuclear plants around the world times 74 million gallons of water per day for each nuclear plant, and what do you get?

Close to 30 BILLION GALLONS PER DAY are going through nuclear power plants for cooling purposes. How much radioactive pollution is ending up in the water as it moves through these toxic heavy metal emitting poison factories?

400 x 74 million = 29,600,000,000

Multiply the pollution above times 400 and what do you get?

NUCLEAR AND COAL ARE BECOMING MORE EXPENSIVE, AS RENEWABLES SUCH AS WIND, SOLAR, GEOTHERMAL AND ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARE GETTING CHEAPER AND BETTER, PLUS CREATING MORE JOBS PER DOLLAR INVESTED

In surveying the energy landscape, there’s an emerging, inevitable trend. Old coal and nuclear plants are being decommissioned while new ones are extremely difficult to keep within estimated construction budgets.

Age and cost have caught up to the old plants. For the new plants being planned, there’s not much good news. The Edwardsport coal gasification plant in Indiana, the Prairie State coal supercritical plant in Illinois, and the carbon capture demonstration project in Mississippi all suffer from cost overruns and/or scandal.

The new nuclear units at the Vogtle plant are suffering the same cost-overrun issues. Financially, it’s all over for coal and nuclear. Bringing up the rear in the demise of the 20th Century energy paradigm are natural gas-fired plants.

Where renewables begin to dominate the market, as in Germany, Iceland and other countries as well, the ability of gas fired power plants to make money is waning. The promise of small, modular nuclear or gas technology will prove equally elusive as massive public subsidies will be needed to support them, in order to have any hope of bringing down the kilowatt price.

AIR POLLUTION COSTS ARE 800 PERCENT THE COST OF SUBSIDIES TO THE FOSSIL FUEL INDUSTRY IN INDIA; IS IT THE SAME IN THE US?

HEALTH COST OF AIR POLLUTION 8 TIMES SPENT ON FUEL SUBSIDIES IN INDIA: REPORT

NEW DELHI: A new report by Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), an European environmental non-profit has assessed the spending of seven economically powerful countries on fossil fuel subsidies and health costs associated with fossil fuel subsidies. India, according to the report spent as much as $16.9 billion on oil, gas and coal subsidies in 2013 and 2014 but health costs to meet the burden of air pollution linked diseases is eight times the fossil fuel subsidies at 140.7 billion dollars.

The report “Hidden Price Tags” highlights that India can provide 375 million households with solar lamps or train nearly 32,000 extra doctors for rural areas with the fossil fuel subsidy spending of $16.9 billion annually. This is assessed considering that each solar lamp costs about $22.5, and All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS’) recent estimates suggest a cost of Rs 1.7 crore to educate a doctor. The subsidy amount could even fund 24% of the total money needed to implement health care coverage for all Indians, the report suggests.

The study found that oil, natural gas, and coal received $369 billion, $121 billion, and $104 billion (2010 dollars), respectively, or 70% of total energy subsidies over that period.

Multiply US fossil fuel subsidies of 594 BILLION and you get 1,322 BILLION in associated healthcare costs due to the use of fossil fuels in America.

What could 594 plus 1,322 BILLION dollars buy in terms of transforming the US economy to clean renewable solar, wind, water, tides, geothermal, which don't have a healthcare penalty attached to them?

CLEAN, PURE, UNPOLLUTED, DRINKABLE WATER BECOMING MORE SCARCE, MORE EXPENSIVE, AND MUCH HARDER TO FIND

Credit/source; Union of American Citizens

The next nail in the coffin for these passé technologies is water. The water/energy nexus, as it is known, is a big deal for carbon based and nuclear power plants. Well, not publicly, but internally among federal agencies, in a response to a letter sent recently to the DOE, the DOE “assured” the Boise, Idaho-based Snake River Alliance “that the Department recognizes the significance of interdependencies between water and energy.”

The US Geological Survey wrote this year, “the Nation faces an increasingly large set of water-resource challenges as water shortages and water-use conflicts become more common.”

The Department of Defense considers climate change and water as national security issues. Its response to the water/energy/climate nexus is building efficiency, renewables, and microgrids at it's military bases. In other words, there’s essentially consensus among federal agency analysts that the challenges posed by the water/energy nexus are here to stay and will become more severe.

The water/energy nexus doesn’t stop with power generation. Extraction industries like coal, oil, nuclear and natural gas all use voluminous amounts of water.

The end results of all of these types of power plants have been extensive water use, above ground, below ground pollution and public health impacts caused by fracking, uranium mining, thorium mining and coal mining. In one instance, fracking actually ran dry the water supply of a small Texas town. Uranium tailing piles left over after the miners leave pollutes the air, causes lung cancer plus other health issues. And those piles are actually toxic, radioactive waste that contaminates the entire environment for tens of thousands of years.

COAL POWER PLANTS POLLUTE DRINKING WATER WITH COOLING TOWER BROMIDES

Erin Brockovich For over 50 Years Coal Fired Power Plant cooling tower biocides polluted our Drinking Water sources with Chrome-6... today the poison of choice is Bromide.

Bromide is legally discharged... much like Chrome-6 was; however, Bromate is formed when bromide in the water reacts with Drinking Water disinfectant (chlorine) in our Water Treatment Plants (WTPs).

Bromate is a dangerous regulated cancer causing chemical in Drinking Water.

This new information is from the American Water Works Association."

CONFLICTS OVER WATER USE AND RIGHTS ARE INCREASING

Conflicts over water are increasing. There’s the growing competition between fracking firms and the agriculture sector in Colorado, not to mention the law suit to prevent a planned nuclear plant from securing water rights in Utah.

DROUGHTS/HEAT WAVES INCREASING IN SEVERITY AND LENGTH

Then there’s extended drought and heat waves that have impacted the operation of thermoelectric plants in Texas, North Carolina, Wyoming, and in Long Island Sound over the last few years. Nuclear plants are actually having to shut down because the water is getting too warm and cannot cool off the plant sufficiently.

Why All Nuclear Power Plants Must Be Shut Down

The bottom line is that the 20th Century electric power mix and its attendant fuel cycles withdraw and consume enormous amounts of water that we can ill afford to squander. But we have the technology now to replace a large portion of the old electric grid. There’s the rub.

This is why such a front burner issue isn’t consistently before the public. The water/energy nexus puts a significant crimp in the President’s and Congress’ all-of-the-above strategy for energy development.

PRESIDENT TRUMP PROMISED JOBS TO COAL INDUSTRY, BUT DOES AMERICA REALLY WANT A TOXIC, RADIOACTIVE POISON EMITTING POWER PLANT IN THEIR BACKYARD?

This government table shows all of the heavy metal radioactive poisons that are emitted when coal is burned..

THIS GRAPH SHOWS WHY THOSE DIRTY COAL JOBS ARE NOT COMING BACK, NO MATTER HOW HARD TRUMP TRIES

Trump support in coal country is the ultimate demonstration that there is indeed a sucker born every minute. No, the jobs won't come back
https://twitter.com/paulkrugman/status/846720771611398144

Trump’s Program: Betraying the Planet for Profit
But as this process unfolds, it’s worth remembering that much of today’s regressive shift is built on falsehoods – and not just about science.

USA Today noted, for example, “The order makes good on Trump’s promise to end what he called a ‘war on coal,’ and to bring back coal jobs. ‘I made them this promise. We will put our miners back to work,’ Trump said Tuesday.”

[T]he US coal industry is dying regardless of anything Trump does, said industry experts, with fewer than 100,000 jobs now largely concentrated in Appalachian states.

“It won’t add any coal jobs, but it will set back the country as a leader on the environment,” finance director Tom Sanzillo of the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis based in Cleveland told BuzzFeed News. Coal is a declining industry that serves up a product, energy, that costs more than wind, solar, and natural gas.

Source/credit; The Other 98 Percent

“That isn’t going to change and the fundamentals are inescapable,” Sanzillo said. “Nobody in the industry has a serious plan to reverse that.”

Robert Murray, head of the largest private US coal firm, Murray Coal, for example, told The Guardian on Monday that Trump should “temper his expectations” on reviving coal industry jobs, adding: “He can’t bring them back.”
A New York Timesreport added, “[C]oal miners also should not assume their jobs will return if Trump’s regulations take effect.” The article an energy economist added that “we could see a decrease in coal jobs,” even with Trump’s regressive agenda.

AQUIFERS ARE BEING DRAWN DOWN AT A CATASTROPHIC RATE

The DOE and OMB under BOTH Presidents' Bush and Obama buried a report mandated by Congress to create a Water/Energy Roadmap for the country. The USGS is no longer releasing its water use survey historically published every 5 years.

The research from the water/energy nexus is simply missing. We need to push that information into the public domain. We also need to adequately fund the USGS analysis of aquifers.

More detailed fresh drinking water supply information is important. Passing that information along in a simple, transparent, easy to understand way to the public is critical.

But constantly studying the issue or setting up bureaucratic methods for internal discussion is the equivalent of fiddling while Rome burns, particularly when there’s consensus among federal agencies and we have the technology to act now.

There’s no question. The water/energy nexus issue is a hot potato. But instead of exhibiting true leadership on the issue our elected officials in Washington DC are playing it politically safe. They prefer not to rock the boat instead of calling for real change.

QUIT SQUANDERING PRECIOUS WATER ON 1% CONTROLLED BOONDOGGLES

We need to begin with the phase out of thermoelectric power over time while ramping up investments in sustainable efficiency, renewables, distributed power and storage technologies that will substantially relieve the pressures on our very limited and precious water supply. There is only one planet, and we are one human family.

Many other countries are already moving in this direction of preserving their water supplies and not squandering them on useless short term, dead ender projects.

WATER POLLUTION AND CONTAMINATION OF DRINKING WATER IS A GROWING PROBLEM

PlowboyGrownUp May 26, 2016 "The water contamination on the Navajo Nation is more horrific than in Flint, Michigan. However, the contamination continues because of the racism in the United States which disregards the contamination in Indian country. The collapsed media in Indian country, and the biased mainstream media, fail to expose it.
The Navajo Nation's water has been poisoned since the 1950s by uranium mining, then by coal mining, and dirty coal-fired power plants.

Navajo water has long been contaminated by Peabody Coal mining on Black Mesa, uranium spills, strewn radioactive tailing from the Cold War uranium mining, and recently the EPA's poisoning of the Animas and San Juan Rivers.

Further, the US government knew when it relocated Navajos to the Sanders, Arizona, area that radiation from the Church Rock, N.M., uranium spill would poison their water by way of the Rio Puerco wash. In the Four Corners region, three coal fired power plants poison the water in runoffs."

WHAT YOU CAN DO; SET A GOAL OF 100% CARBON FREE, NUCLEAR FREE RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR ENTIRE WORLD

What can indigenous people teach us about living in harmony with Nature? Here is one example of a low tech, sustainable way of living for 700 future generations, without causing harm to people or the environment. Think sacred circles of pure air, water, and fertile soil recycling everything.

Iceland is almost completely powered by geothermal energy. The US has enough of this energy to completely replace all of it's existing power plants, and more.

Europe is developing it's offshore wind energy reserves. There is enough offshore wind energy to completely replace all existing power plants in the US. However, the US at this date has ZERO offshore wind power plants, as of 2014.. There are many solutions, and they are all waiting for us.

It is time for the US to move in the direction of creating sustainable energy production facilities, instead of building dead enders that cause only health problems and financial boondoggles, while wasting/polluting the precious, very limited fresh water supply that the US has. Seven future generations are counting on leaders to make the sustainable decisions that are needed today.

Aircraft end up killing many birds; should we ban all flying?
On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 from LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte/Douglas International Airport ditched into the Hudson River after experiencing a loss of both turbines. It is suspected that the engine failure was caused by running into a flock of geese at an altitude of about 975 m (3,200 feet), shortly after takeoff. All 150 passengers and 5 crew members were safely evacuated after a successful water landing.[62] On May 28, 2010, the NTSB published its final report into the accident.[63]
