Scientists found an increase in leg, antennae and wing shape mutations among butterflies collected following the 2011 Fukushima accident. Two months after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in March 2011, a team of Japanese researchers collected 144 adult pale grass blue (Zizeeria maha) butterflies from 10 locations in Japan, including the Fukushima area. When the accident occurred, the adult butterflies would have been overwintering as larvae.

Via sgdeluxedoc I've really noticed that, over the last few years. No mosquitos at all.. OK frankly I hate them, but I know how important they are. Few bees, no butterflies, fewer caterpillars.. one dragonfly in 3 years.. Something is definitely up. I am not entirely sure radiation is the whole culprit, as insects are pretty resistant.. Who knows, however?

Perhaps what is most worrying than pictures of deformed butterflies, is that butterflies go through many generations fairly quickly. None of the butterflies were affected by radiation right after the accident, as they were considered to be highly resistant to radiation effects.
However, within 6 months the butterflies were having huge problems, and they were having increasing problems with each successive generation of butterfly babies. In other words, the genetic problem was spreading, after it was initiated by the radiation.
SUMMARY
The Fukushima mega nuclear disaster does not spell good news for the human race, or any form of life for that matter. Butterflies are much like canaries in the coal mine.
