DR CHRIS BUSBY EXPLAINS WHY URANIUM IS BAD FOR HEALTH, AND CAUSES ALL KINDS OF DISEASES AND CANCERS

AREVA; Uranium toxicity and depleted uranium health problems
VIDEO https://youtu.be/42hJR1fX5VU 9 min.

Dr. Chris Busby of the University of Liverpool explains precisely how uranium - including natural, enriched, and depleted uranium - causes health problems. This information has not thus far been acted on by any regulatory agencies. The presentation was made in February 2008 as part of the public interventions in the environmental assessment of AREVA's proposed Midwest uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan. Busby was asked to present by the Saskatoon-based Inter-Church Uranium Committee Education Cooperative.

Uranium mining can be seen as digging up Pandora's Box and then opening it permanently, so that the horrors inside can affect anyone who is nearby with all kinds of suffering and early death.

COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD HAVE NO STRATEGY FOR MONITORING THE HEALTH OF URANIUM MINERS OR PEOPLE LIVING NEAR URANIUM MINES, PROCESSING PLANTS, NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

Cleaning Up Eastern Europe’s Radioactive Legacy
Romanian and Czech authorities are failing to ensure the safety of former uranium miners and other people exposed to contamination, an investigation claims. Romania and the Czech Republic are the last countries in Europe that produce uranium in significant quantities. Decades of surface and underground mining have left physical scars in the form of slag heaps and radioactive tailing ponds, and affected the health of thousands.Yet, according to an investigation by EU Observer, neither country has a national strategy for monitoring the health of miners or people living near contaminated areas.A study by researchers from Romania and Spain concluded that radon gas – which Romania’s Health Ministry admits is the main source of exposure to radioactivity for uranium miners, and a known trigger for lung cancer – could be responsible for between 1,000 and 3,000 deaths each year in Romania

INDIAN CULTURES HAVE ANCIENT TABOO'S AROUND URANIUM DEPOSITS; DO NOT GO NEAR AREA OR TOUCH ROCKS

Only 1% of the uranium ore consists of uranium, which means the dug up rocks must be crushed into a fine powder to get at this minute amount of uranium bound up safely in the rocks, deep underground. (All Indian cultures have traditions and beliefs that say these 'evil' rock formations should not be touched, handled or mined.)

TOXIC AND RADIOACTIVE URANIUM MINING TAILING PILES ARE SITTING ALL OVER THE US, ABANDONED BY THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY AND MINING COMPANIES

First, they ignore the fact that mining and milling the fuel for one average reactor for one year will create roughly 180,000 metric tons of uranium mill tailings--of the type that poured out of the Church Rock dam, and that are sitting in piles throughout the West. According to the NRC's Ross Scarano 1.6 metric tons of tailings occupy a cubic meter of space. Those 180,000 metric tons of tailings created to fuel a reactor for a year will occupy roughly 100,000 cubic meters of space--a long way from the two cubic meters of "rear-end" wastes advertised by the industry.[38] As for those smaller volumes of "rear-end" wastes that come directly from the reactors, they make up in intensity what they may lack in size.

Longtime nuclear advocate Bernard Cohen, of Pittsburgh, argues that those yearly rear-end wastes "would fit comfortably under a dining-room table."[39] But anyone eating at that table would have a hard time walking away. The heat and radiation generated by spent fuel demand that it be diluted and spaced apart to avoid a chain reaction. Dr. Marvin Resnikoff of the State University of New York at Buffalo estimates those "two cubic meters" would require ten thousand times that much space for safe storage. Any "dining-room table" they'd fit under would need a top the size of a football field and legs ten feet high.[40]

ALL URANIUM MINES CAUSE INCREASE IN RADIATION EXPOSURE PLUS HEAVY METAL POLLUTION OF GROUNDWATER, SOIL AND AIR

rogerthat March 27, 2015 Expansion of Four Utah Uranium Mines Halted
MOAB, Utah— In response to formal objections by Uranium Watch and other conservation groups, the Manti-La Sal National Forest on Tuesday halted plans to allow the uranium industry to expand the La Sal Mines Complex — a complex of four old uranium mines located in La Sal, Utah.

Citing violations of the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act and other laws and regulations, Uranium Watch and four other conservation groups objected to the Forest Service’s draft approval of the plan. The large-scale expansion would include drilling 3,800 new exploration holes, dewatering an estimated 50 springs and a surface disturbance of more than 200 acres. The mines threaten radiological and heavy metal pollution of groundwater, soil, and air, putting wildlife and people at risk.

According to Sarah Fields, Uranium Watch program director: “The continued operation of the La Sal Mines Complex will cause increasing emissions of radon gas, a radioactive hazardous air pollutant, into the community. The USFS cannot claim that radon emissions only a quarter-mile from the La Sal Elementary School are safe.”

RADIOACTIVE DUST FROM TAILING PILES BLOWS DOWNWIND MANY HUNDREDS OF MILES

Once the uranium is dug up and taken out of the ore, the toxic leftovers are piled up in huge piles or left in huge open pit mines, which contain many other radioactive elements, all of which are harmful to humans.

The dust from these tailing piles blows downwind and exposes everyone to that radiation hazard, hundreds to thousands of miles downwind.

(picture from video below)

TAILING PILES ARE MORE RADIOACTIVE AND TOXIC THAN URANIUM TAKEN OUT OF THEM

The tailing piles are actually MORE radioactive than the uranium that is taken out of the rocks.

The uranium is refined using large amounts of electricity and polluting chemicals.

This uranium is then used inside nuclear power plants and/or to make nuclear bombs, plus depleted uranium weapons/shells.

 (picture from video below)

LEFTOVER WASTE FROM PRODUCTION OF NUCLEAR PLANT FUEL IS DEPLETED URANIUM, A TOXIC HEAVY METAL POISON AND RADIOACTIVE KILLER

The leftover waste from any nuclear power plant is made into depleted uranium munitions, bombs and shells, which pollute the planet for 10 BILLION years... For more information on this toxic garbage that is leftover from this supposedly 'clean and green' industry, click on the following link.

Depleted Uranium Effects In The Human Body, via A Green Road
http://agreenroad.blogspot.com/2012/03/depleted-uranium-effects-in-human-body.html

According to Paolo Scampa, to produce 1 ton fuel for a nuclear plant means production of 4.8 tons of DU…. In all nuke plants we have a total of 35,000 tons of fuel and 166,000 tons of DU.

A really rich ore contains 1.5 kg uranium per ton. To get 0.24% U235 instead of of 0.711% as in natural uranium enrichment process means concentrating it further. Knowing that the U235 represents 0.711% of natural uranium, to gather a mass of 25 kg of uranium 235 must be available in theory 25,000 / 3,516,174 = 0.711% or 3.52 gross tons of natural uranium which must be mined and removed from underground.

However, since the process of separating uranium-235 from uranium-238 reaches at most 67% efficiency in collecting it, in practice we end up with 3516174/67% = 5,248,021 g 5.25 t of natural uranium or 210 times the mass of U235 sought.

To have this mass of natural uranium, assuming 90% of the ore content is captured (mining waste retaining only 10% of the original natural uranium) must be provided to extract 3890 tons of ore grading 1,500 grams of uranium per ton is 1,500 ppm which represents roughly a volume of 1940 m3 (5,248,021 / (90% * 0.150%) = 3,89E9 gr or 3890 t).

Ultimately about 1,500 grams of uranium ore per ton is taken from mining to produce only 1350 grams per ton. To get the 0.1350% uranium in ore, it will be necessary to excavate 5,248,021 / 0.1350 =% 3,89E9 gr is 3,890 tons of ore. That radioactive and toxic leftover waste is then left to pollute groundwater, and blow around in the wind, or be used in construction.

PROCESSING OF URANIUM SPREADS ACID WASTE ALL OVER THE ENVIRONMENT, ENDS UP IN OCEAN, MAKING THEM MORE ACIDIC

Once the uranium is taken out of the ground, it must be concentrated. This is done by using lots and lots of sulfuric acid. Here is how it is done; “the construction of the sulfuric acid plant in Zhanakorgan region, Kyzylorda oblast has been completed. The construction of the plant is aimed at providing the uranium industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan with sulfuric acid which is the main reagent in the technology of uranium production by ISL method. The plant will supply sulfuric acid to the ISL mines based on the uranium deposits Khorassan-1, Khorassan-2, Northern and Southern Karamurun. Kazakhstan block sulfur will be the raw material for production. The plant's design capacity is expected to be 500,000 tons of sulfuric acid per year, or 1500 tons per day. Project's total cost is reported to be US $216 million. (Kazatomprom Dec. 9, 2011)”
http://www.wise-uranium.org/umopasi.html

Where does all of this sulfuric acid go? Does it magically just evaporate and disappear? Or, could we surmise that this acid along with the contaminants it contains goes into the closest underground water table, stream, river or body of water? All of this acid waste ends up in the ocean, whether it is emitted up into the air or 'diluted' in water, it all ends up making the oceans more acid.

Reprocessing of nuclear spent fuel requires massive amounts of nitric acid. What happens to those train loads with huge numbers of tank cars full of toxic nitric acid after it is used?

TAILING PILES CONTAIN RADIOACTIVE POLONIUM, 2 BILLION TIMES MORE TOXIC THAN CYANIDE

There is liquid toxic waste left over after the mining and uranium extraction is done. There is also toxic solid waste left over. The uranium mining tailing piles contain Polonium, which is about 2 billion times more toxic than cyanide. But the toxic and/or cancer causing effects of low dose radiation take 2 - 20 years to show up.

Short term studies offered up by the nuclear apologist industry show 'no immediate harm', much like studies of cigarette smoking show no effect short term. But the cancers and genetic damage DO show up in long term studies. The damage also shows up in studies of fetuses, eggs, sperm and very young children.

DUST FROM TAILING PILES CONTAINS MANY POISONOUS RADIOACTIVE ELEMENTS, EVIL IN THE GROUND, AND THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY IS DIGGING IT UP AND THEN SPREADING IT AROUND

"Radioactive substances released into the air from the mining of uranium will include: U-238, Th-232, Rn-222.

The radioactive substances released into the air from the grinding and milling of Uranium includes: U-234, U-235, U-238, Ra-226, Th-230, Th-234, Pb-210, Po-210, Bi-210, Rn-222."

Many times, uranium mines were opened in aborigine areas where dangers are not known, safety measures are not taken, and unemployment is very high (50%).

THE EVIL IN THE GROUND SHORT MOVIE

This movie explains how the U.S. government has been mining for uranium on the Navajo reservation while failing to inform the Navajos of the danger of uranium. URANIUM MINES CONTAMINATE DRINKING WATER; THERE IS NO ANSWER ABOUT HOW TO CLEAN UP THAT TOXIC MESS WHICH CAUSES CANCER AND OTHER DISEASES

rogerthat March 27, 2015 Feds Try To Clean Uranium Found In Navajo Water
By Laurel Morales March 25, 2015

Feds Try To Clean Uranium Found In Navajo Water
During the Cold War, mining companies extracted four million tons of uranium from Navajo land to make nuclear weapons. Uranium left a deadly legacy. And the federal government is still cleaning up the contamination. The Department of Energy piled the uranium tailings, the mining waste byproduct, inside lined pits and sealed them with clay. In Monument Valley federal workers have found uranium contamination in the groundwater.

“For years the attitude was science can fix anything,” said April Gil, environmental team lead for the Department of Energy’s Legacy Management. “You just wait long enough, someone will come up with an idea and we’ll be able to put Mother Nature back to the natural state. And we’ve not been able to do that with uranium.

THE MEDICAL EFFECTS OF URANIUM MINING ON WORKERS

VanneV June 1, 2014 "THE MEDICAL EFFECTS OF URANIUM MINING ON WORKERS [Dr. Helen Caldicott] “In the course of their work, uranium miners are exposed to radon gas, radium dust and gamma radiation – all of which are carcinogenic. “The man is at risk of getting cancer to his lung, to his bone; leukaemia; or cancer to any organ – caused by the gamma radiation….there is no uranium registry for uranium miners in Australia and in the past, 50% of miners who have mined uranium have died of cancer….”

AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINES USED AND ABUSED FOR DECADES BY NUCLEAR CARTEL

Enough! The Australian people were used and abused for decades by the Nuclear Industry.
‘Sickness Country’ – uranium and Kakadu

Angela_R October 8, 2014  "The spill, which follows a move by the federal government to allow the states and territories to assess their own uranium mining applications, has infuriated locals and conservationists."

Kakadu is a territory, not a State, as such, the Federal Government cannot walk away from their responsibilities. The purported radioactivity of the surrounds seem excessive for a mine. Time and again, I have wondered whether uranium mines have been being used as Nuclear Waste Dumps.

URANIUM MINERS DYING AFTER WORKING IN NAMIBIA MINE

VanneV June 1, 2014 "Uranium workers dying after time at Namibia mine, report warns. Miners who dug ore to supply the military found to be dying of cancers and other illnesses at Rio Tinto's Rössing mine. “…Miners who dug uranium ore that supplied the British and US military in the 1970s with the raw material for bombs and civil nuclear power are reported to be dying of cancers and unexplained illnesses after working in one of Africa's largest mines. “A study based on questionnaires of current and former workers at the giant Rio Tinto-owned Rössing uranium mine in Namibia says that everyone questioned was aware of people who are now suffering lung infections and unknown illnesses thought to be linked to their work.

“The mine, in the Namib desert, produces around 7% of the world's uranium but was operated with rudimentary safety when it opened in 1976. "People get sick. We are seeing it in people that have worked for Rössing for a long time. They just go back and die after working at Rössing," one man told researchers working with Earthlife Namibia and the Labour Resource and Research Institute. “The study, which is expected to be published this week, accepts that working conditions in the mine have greatly improved but says that all workers questioned said that they were exposed to high levels of dust.

"Two current workers are on sick leave since 2000 and 2003. One worked as a laboratory technician for 24 years and claims to have proof he was radiated," says a summary of the paper seen by the Guardian. “Rössing, which mines millions of tonnes of rock a year to extract uranium, employs more than 1,500 people. ‘Most workers stated that they are not informed about their health conditions and do not know if they have been exposed to radiation or not. Some workers said they consulted a private doctor to get a second opinion,’ say the authors. "The older workers all said they know miners dying of cancers and other illnesses. Many of these are now retired and many have already died of cancers," says the report….”

URANIUM, THE DEADLIEST METAL

Just because something is 'natural' and it consists of a rock, does not mean it is safe. The following information comes from CCNR, and describes the deadly dangers to uranium miners, from what looks like ordinary rocks.

Via VanneV June 1, 2014 Uranium: The Deadliest Metal, by Dr. Gordon Edwards, President of CCNR at http://www.ccnr.org/uranium_deadliest.html

“…There are only two commercially important uses for uranium: nuclear weapons and nuclear reactors. The ultimate products of the uranium industry are therefore bombs and radioactive wastes. For this reason alone, uranium merits classification as a deadly metal.

“But the lethal nature of uranium was manifested long before the first atomic bombs were built or the first nuclear reactors were fuelled. …

“As early as 1546, and for centuries afterwards, it was reported that underground miners in Schneeberg, Germany, suffered an unusually high incidence of fatal lung disease. In 1879, it was demonstrated both clinically and anatomically that about half of these miners were dying of lung cancer. This was a much higher incidence of lung cancer than that found in the general population. The same grim statistic — 50 per cent mortality from lung cancer — was later found among the miners in Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia. The ores in question were particularly rich in uranium.
“Similar excesses in lung cancer incidence have occurred among iron, lead and zinc miners in Sweden, in fluorspar miners in Newfoundland, and especially among uranium miners in all parts of the world. Scientific papers published in the 1930s, even before the outbreak of World War II, clearly indicated that airborne radioactivity in the mines was the most likely cause of this lung cancer.

The principal culprits are radon gas and its solid by-products, the so-called ‘radon daughters.’… “As the uranium atoms slowly disintegrate over billions of years, a host of radioactive by-products are formed: thorium-230, radium-226, radon-222 and the infamous ‘radon daughters,’ including lead-210 and polonium-210….

“Radon has a relatively short half-life (3.8 days); before long, the air in the mine is heavily contaminated with radon daughters. Adhering to microscopic dust particles, these tiny, pernicious particles are breathed into the miners' lungs where they lodge delivering a massive dose of alpha radiation to the sensitive lung tissue. The result is an extraordinarily high incidence of lung cancer, fibrosis of the lungs, and other lung diseases, all of which take decades to become manifest….

“At Elliot Lake, about a ton of ore is required to extract two pounds of uranium. Huge quantities of pulverized rock (called uranium tailings) are left over from the milling process. The tailings contain 85 per cent of the original radioactivity in the ore: they contain thorium-230, radium-226, and all the other uranium by-products. The tailings also give off at least 10,000 times as much radon gas as the undisturbed ore. (When radon gas is produced inside hard rock, it has little chance to escape; but when the rock is pulverized, radon escapes easily.)…

“According to all scientific evidence, there is no such thing as a "safe dose" of radiation.

Every dose of radiation will cause a corresponding increase in cancers and other diseases. Spreading a given dose out to a larger number of people — so that each individual dose is smaller — does not reduce the number of resulting illnesses. In fact, in the case of alpha radiation, there is very strong evidence from many different quarters that spreading a dose out among more people actually increases the total number of cancers and other diseases. Uranium and most of its by-products, including thorium, radium, radon and most of the radon daughters fall into this category of alpha-emitting substances….

“Radon gas is also given off by phosphate fertilizers (since phosphate ores are rich in uranium). When tobacco crops are so fertilized, radon gas accumulates under the thick canopy of tobacco leaves, and tiny dust particles impregnated with radon daughters adhere to the sticky, resinous hairs on the underside of each leaf. When harvested, the tobacco contains high concentrations of radioactive lead-210 and polonium-210. Cigarette smokers breathe these radon daughters into their lungs with every inhalation….

“In addition to killing uranium miners and those living in contaminated homes, each uranium mine is, in effect, a ‘slow bomb’ — spreading deadly radioactive poisons over vast areas of the earth, as surely as the Chernobyl disaster did, as surely as atmospheric tests of nuclear weapons have done, but at an insidiously slower rate. Radon gas can travel a thousand miles…

Radon gas can travel a thousand miles in just a few days, with a light breeze. As it travels low to the ground (it is much heavier than air) it deposits its ‘daughters’ — solid radioactive fallout — on the vegetation, soil and water below; the resulting radioactive materials enter the food chain, ending up in fruits and berries, the flesh of fish and animals, and ultimately, in the bodies of human beings….

“On February 25, 1986, the Wall Street Journal printed a front page story that portrayed the 220 million tons of uranium tailings in the U.S. [as pf 1992] as an ecological and financial time bomb….
“The tailings will remain dangerously radioactive for millions of years. Thorium- 230, itself a by-product of uranium, is an alpha-emitter with a half-life of almost 80,000 years.

It continually replenishes all the other radioactive by-products of uranium in the abandoned tailings piles. Radium-226, a bone-seeking alpha-emitting carcinogen which is at least 20 times as harmful as strontium-90, is blown in the wind, washed by the rain, and leached into the waterways from the tailings piles, where it re-concentrates by factors of thousands in aquatic plants and by factors of hundreds in land plants. It has a half-life of 1,600 years….

“Even the extraordinary toxicity of plutonium can be rightfully attributed to uranium, since plutonium is created by transmutation of uranium through the absorption of neutrons….
” If we do not come to grips with the Pandora's box of problems…"

VULTURE CAPITALIST URANIUM MINING COMPANIES PREY ON POOR INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES WITH NO POLITICAL CONNECTIONS, THAT ALSO HAVE HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT

The combination of these factors allowed private companies to come in and make huge profits, while paying only low wages with no benefits to aborigine miners. Aborigines around the world are being left with the negative health effects and abandoned mines as well as toxic, radioactive tailing piles, plus the negative impacts of numerous spills and accidents.

US GOVERNMENT ADMITS HARM AND DEATHS ARE BEING CAUSED BY URANIUM MINES AND TAILING PILES

The US government established a compensation act in 1990 to award uranium miners $100,000 each, because the evidence proved that they were harmed, from just the exposure of uranium ore. We are not even talking about the highly radioactive substances coming from nuclear plants yet. This ore is the unconcentrated 'weak' stuff.

The same relationship of harm caused to humans is true when it comes to things that are emitted or released from nuclear power plants, enrichment plants, recycling plants etc; Substances released consist of; radioactive tritium, xenon, carbon uranium, plutonium, radium, radon, cesium, plus many others.

It seems somewhat idiotic for nuclear apologists to keep claiming that low level radiation does no harm, when the EPA has tightly regulated radon emissions in homes, and the US government has a uranium miner compensation fund, plus a fund for veterans exposed to Hiroshima or other US nuclear test bomb blast low level radiation.

CANCERS CAN TAKE 2 - 20 YEARS TO DEVELOP FROM THE TIME OF EXPOSURE

Cigarettes contain small amounts of radioactive Polonium, which is about 2 billion times more toxic than cyanide. Is it any wonder that tobacco caused lung cancer rates are so high? But again, studies have proven that the cancers take 20 years to develop. Does it make any difference if a bullet takes 20 years to kill someone, or just a few minutes?

The speed of how fast a cancer grows is dependent in part on the speed of cell division and cell growth. A slower dividing cell will have a longer latency period before cancer is detectable than a fast growing cell that divides frequently.

TOBACCO INDUSTRY LIED AND SAID IN FRONT OF CONGRESS, THAT IT DID NOT CAUSE CANCER, JUST LIKE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY

The tobacco industry also tried to deny all harm caused by tobacco. Do you remember all of the top tobacco company executives testifying before Congress under oath? They all swore in front of God and everyone watching that tobacco did NOT and could not cause cancer, ever.

Bottom line, we keep getting the same old story, but in different industries. For more information about low dose radiation studies and effects, click on the following links;

TAILING PILES ACTUALLY GET MORE RADIOACTIVE (RADIUM AND URANIUM) OVER TIME

The dust from uranium mining tailing piles also contains uranium and other toxic, radioactive substances, such as radium and radon gas, (both are known cancer causing agents) which for human purposes, lasts forever.

The radiation amount and toxicity from these substances actually increases over time, as the breakdown and decay products are generated from the original materials.

RADIOACTIVE TAILING PILES OFTEN USED IN BUILDING MATERIALS

The toxic and radioactive rubble and dust/gravel leftover uranium mining tailing piles are often used in building materials, such as cement, bricks, etc. This material makes the buildings that these substances are used in radioactive and toxic to live in, if for no other reason than from the radon gas releases. This toxic exposure and spreading of radioactive substances from uranium mining tailing piles is happening all around the world.

DR CALDICOTT EXPLAINS HOW CANCERS DEVELOP FROM LOW LEVEL EXPOSURE TO RADIATION, SUCH AS URANIUM MINE TAILING PILES

The health effects of uranium mining causes illnesses in the workers that are impossible to manage or control. Lung cancer is common, as are other types of cancers.

In the video below, Dr. Helen Caldicott MD explains how cancer develops from a low level exposure to radioactive substances, such as living near nuclear power plants, uranium mining, uranium tailing piles, depleted uranium weapons lefover dust, radon gas, etc.

The nuclear industry says it is entirely clean and green, which is completely false and bogus information, according to medical experts who have extensively studied these claims and proven them to be entirely false, such as Dr. Caldicott MD.

In the following short video, Dr. Caldicott also talks about the HUGE amounts of global warming fossil fuel used during uranium mining, uranium enrichment, power plants and waste disposal.

The heat and radioactive substances released from nuclear power plants once they are operating also causes global warming, because huge amounts of water are heated up to keep the plant cool. All of this is covered up and hidden by the apologists hired by the nuclear industry, as well as the regulators and governments who are bought off, controlled, manipulated and/or lobbied into compliance by this monopoly.

Watch this video featured Dr. Caldicott MD, for more details;

Helen Caldicott spoke inside the Bella Center at the COP 15 meetings describing the problems with nuclear power, including the health effects of radiation and nuclear proliferation. Part 2 of 3.

NUCLEAR ACCIDENTS ARE ALL COVERED UP, MINIMIZED AND DENIED

The nuclear industry talks about being 'safe'. The only problem with this claim, is that it is false as well. In short, just about every accident that happens anywhere is either covered up, denied, spun, or minimized by the industry, the government, the regulators and the utility involved. LOCAL COMMUNITIES FORCED TO TAKE RADIOACTIVE MINES AND NUCLEAR FACILITIES BY NATIONAL LAW, EVEN IF THEY ARE 99% OPPOSED TO THEM

The following 3 short videos illustrates how there is a battle between a local community that typically does NOT want uranium mining to happen anywhere around it, and the national government in combination with nuclear 'regulators' who end up approving nuclear projects despite what the local community wants. Typically, these state or national 'approval' bodies are corrupted and taken over by huge corporations globally. (It is still worth fighting, because sometimes these battles can be won)

The state or national agencies/regulatory bodies then force local communities into things that they do not want, such as uranium mines, nuclear waste material storage or recycling facilities, nuclear plants, etc.

In a few cases, the local community wins this battle, but more often than not, the community loses, because it does not have the numbers, influence, money or political power to keep huge corporations and all of their money plus the influence it brings in out.

The money that these huge corporations have is often used as a wedge. The corporations use money given as 'perks' or grants to those in the community who are in favor of it, while denying or fighting those who are opposed to it.

DIABLO CANYON NUCLEAR POWER PLANT WAS APPROVED  AND SUPPORTED BY THE NATIONAL SIERRA CLUB

For example, the Diablo Canyon Project got the National Sierra Club to approve/promote the building of their nuclear power plant in California, through financial and other 'perks' specific to key individuals or organizations.

This same type of dynamic or local bottoms up community values versus top down for profit battle plays out in other ways in local communities, such as Walmart coming in and putting many small business owners out of business, (while promising jobs).

ABORIGINES OFTEN PRESSURED TO TAKE ON NUCLEAR WASTE

R A D I O A C T I V E W A S T E I N A U S T R A L I A
By Kia Mistilis. Independent journalist and contributing editor to Nuke Free Future

Angela_R October 8, 2014  "After shaking the hands of the aboriginal people, after apologizing for the past and returning 60% of the land of the Northern Territory, certain individuals sought to induce aborigines to provide some of their land as a waste dump.

"By 2020, Australia could become one of the world’s major storage sites for nuclear waste. This includes low and medium radioactive waste from the southern states of Australia, (currently stored above ground) and high level radioactive waste imported from France, Germany and the USA.

4000 cubic metres of nuclear waste which has been stockpiling for over 50 years in southern Australian states would be transported to NT by rail or road.

2000 cubic metres of radioactive contaminated soil would travel from the Woomera defence area in South Australia to the Northern Territory.

Stockpiles of waste from the Lucas Heights reactor in southern Sydney would be transported through dozens of cities and towns to the dump site.

High level radioactive waste, including weapons grade plutonium, would be imported from the United States in nuclear submarines docking in Darwin’s centrally located city port, and then transported by rail and truck to be stored in the Northern Territory.

32 cubic metres of spent nuclear fuel rods (high level radioactive waste) would be re-imported from France and Scotland."

A legal case was conducted in Melbourne earlier this year. The judgement was in favour of the aboriginal plaintiffs.

Yet the pursuit of the vulnerable continues as these countries seek to find another site!

Re: Registry for miners.

"The Australian National Radiation Dose Register (ANRDR) was established in 2010 for the uranium mining and milling industry to ensure that records of a worker's radiation doses are maintained in a centralised register regardless of where the individual is working."

SUMMARY

It is time to shut down the nuclear industry and create a zero carbon, zero nuclear future. There is no room for creating cancers, deaths and deformities starting in the uranium mines, then in the processing mills, then in the refining process, then in the nuclear plants, and finally in the storage facilities. The whole process from beginning to end is filled with disease, death and suffering.
